Autumn in Seoul, one walk at a time
Ginkgo leaves, roasted chestnuts and the quiet streets behind Deoksugung. My favourite season, and where I go to enjoy it.
Every October I promise myself one long walk through the city before the leaves fall. This year I started at Deoksugung Palace and followed the stone-wall road, 돌담길, until my feet asked me to stop.
The ginkgo street
The trees along the wall turn bright yellow at the end of October. Couples take photos, office workers walk slower than usual, and someone always sells roasted chestnuts on the corner.
낙엽이 정말 예쁘다! The fallen leaves are so pretty!
Where to warm up
When the wind gets cold, I go into a small café near Jeongdong and order a 유자차, a hot citron tea. It tastes like autumn in a cup.
If you visit Seoul in the autumn, give yourself one slow afternoon without plans. You’ll hear plenty of everyday Korean, too.
